Figures of the Day

City Street Fashion
Pastel 8 x 10
Sold

It is a very busy summer and there has been little time for posting. I have been creating a series of figures as a break from my most conventional painting.

My painting and teaching activities at the Fruitlands Museum are on-going until the end of October. Please check their web site for more information. The Layers exhibit by 80 Dusty Fingers at the Museum Gallery ends on September 8th. Don't miss this beautiful show if you have not yet seen it!

Sentier des Ocres

Inspired from a walk through the old ochre quarries of Rousillon, classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France. The ochre mines closed in the 1930's and the Sentier des Ocres is now a protected site. Ochre pigments ranging from yellow and orange to red (from other regions) can be purchased in the tourist shops in town. I mixed a little of it in my watercolor under painting.

Daily Figures

 Red Accessories - Pastel 8 x 5
Sold

Since taking a workshop with Tony Allain, I have integrated what I learned into my daily routine and have been painting at least one figure a day, fast and with very few strokes. Today, it is "Red Accessories"... just because I love red shoes.

The French countryside looks like a red carpet during poppy season in May and June. This field with the Alpilles in the distance was on the way to Roussillon.

Workshop with Tony Allain

On their Way
Pastel 8 x 10
NFS

I recently attended a workshop organized by the Pastel Society of Connecticut, with master pastelist Tony Allain. What a treat! Tony's generosity in sharing painting tips and techniques left us with many "take aways" after 3 days of painting outside of our comfort zone:

- Painting from sketches, not photographs
- Applying the least amount of pastel strokes (150 max.) to keep paintings fresh
- Speed paintings (10 minutes) to loosen up
- Creating a painting with 3 colors (3 values of each)
- Painting figures with a wide marker (like a Sharpie) and applying deliberate pastel marks

I composed "On their Way" entirely with pastels since I did not have wide markers at the workshop. It is my first attempt at a group of figures. So much fun!

Demos at the Fruitlands Museum

I feel privileged to be included in the Eighty Dusty Fingers pastel group selected as the 2015 "Artists in Residence" at the Fruitlands Museum. It is an honor to be sharing a residency with such talented pastel artists as Linee Baird, Cynthia Crimmin, Dave Kaphammer, Gary Ozias, Arlene Richman, Lisa Regopoulos and Jeanne Rosier Smith.

The residency includes classes, workshops, plein air and formal demonstrations, as well as exhibits from April through October, 2015. Please contact the Fruitlands Museum or check their website for more information.

Demos on Sunday 3 May
I will be giving a demonstration on the pastel medium from noon to 2:00pm in the Wayside building of the Fruitlands Museum on May 3rd. I will discuss materials, how to apply different pastel techniques and illustrate the process. Lisa Regopoulos will then perform a formal pastel demonstration from 2:00-4:00pm. Don't miss a great afternoon of learning and fun!

PS: You can enjoy an early brunch at the Fruitlands Museum Cafe or bring your own brown bag lunch to the demo.
