Our delightful hosts Claude and Martine from "La Maison de la Treille" in Tourtour France, served this intriguing little fruit at breakfast with other delicacies. I had been served this fancy little fruit before but did not know anything about it. I found some interesting information about it here. It does not only make a beautiful garnish; it tastes great too!

Foliage is New England is at its peak, particularly in my neighborhood. The bright, almost garish colors I love have been greeting me every day for the last couple of weeks. I am painting a series of fall scenes to reflect the ephemeral beauty of season. This is the first in the series.

In September, the country roads of Normandy are filled with wonderful things to eat: hazelnuts, blackberries, mushrooms and chestnuts. They are right there for the picking. I found these fresh hazelnuts hanging from their tree while taking a walk near my brother's house in the small village of Montgaroult. I couldn't wait to crack them open to bring back a taste from my childhood.

When they are ripe, hazelnuts drop out of their shell. This one tried to get away but got caught!
