Satsuma Mandarins Three Ways

Satsuma Mandarins Three Ways
Pastels 6 x 6

A favorite of the season: Satsuma mandarins. These sweet and delicious winter fruit are available in most markets for a few more weeks. I love their shapes and entertained myself painting them in 3 different ways, using a variety of surfaces and techniques.

Upcoming shows

Please mark your calendars for two of my upcoming events in September and October.

"Along their Path" Gallery 111 at Frame-ables at 111 Thoreau Street in Concord, MA - Reception Saturday 20 September 4:30-6:30pm

"All about Pastel" Center on the Common in Harvard, MA - Reception Sunday 5 October 3:30-6:30pm

Come and enjoy a pastel show at Harvard’s Center on the Common featuring my work and paintings by my students from the Center and the NOA Gallery of Groton, MA.  While you are in Harvard, experience the beauty of a classic New England town in the fall.  You can visit the Fruitlands Museum, go apple picking in the famous Harvard orchards and see a great art exhibit while enjoying snacks and refreshments.  It’s the ideal way to spend a fall Sunday!

It will be a great time and I would love to see you at both events.

When artist friends gather for a weekend, they talk about art, share techniques and tips, scout for plein air scenes to paint and sometimes put you on the spot to do a demo... Here is mine of lemons painted on UArt paper, the first one done with a watercolor underpainting, the second one with pastel and rubbing alcohol. It was great fun and I was happy to oblige.

Pastel workshop and PSNH show

We had another fun and creative pastel workshop at the Center on the Common in Harvard, MA this last Saturday. Students experimented with different under painting methods to explore what they liked best. Painting on Colourfix black paper seemed most popular but everyone produced great results with their watercolor and alcohol under paintings as well. Above is a sample of their great work.

Look for details about the next pastel workshop at the Center on the Common in Harvard on June 28th, 2014.

The Pastel Society of New Hampshire is hosting its 9th Annual Members Exhibition at the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Concord, NH. The opening reception is on Sunday, April 27th from 2 to 4:00pm. My two paintings "Luminosity" and "Evening Light" will be part of the show. Hope to see many of you there.

Ripening

This painting is in the Westford Regional Art Event 2014. The reception is on Friday 28 March from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Parish Center for the Arts in Westford, MA. Looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Home Grown

Home Grown
Pastel, 8 x 10

My friend Donna delighted me with the gift of a small lemon tree last year. I patiently watched it bud, bloom, grow and produce eight wonderfully tasty lemons. I am watching it intently again this year and have counted twelve blossoms so far!

This painting will be in the "Earthly Delights" exhibit at the Yarmouth Gallery from April through May. The opening reception is on April 5th from 4:00-7:00pm.

Pastel workshop

We all had fun and students created great paintings in my pastel workshop at the Center on the Common in Harvard, MA this last Saturday.  Below are examples of some of my favorites among their creations.  Also, check out Bobbi Heath's blog for more details on the process and her own results. The class was designed to paint the same subject three times using different methods: a dry pastel application on black Colourfix paper, a watercolor under painting on Wallis paper and finally an alcohol wash on Wallis paper. Results were equally good and interesting with each approach.  All should feel proud!

The next pastel workshop at the Center in Harvard is scheduled for April 12th. More details to follow.
