First Snow on ShakerMill Pond

First Snow on Shaker Mill Pond - Pastel 10 x 10

There nothing more exciting than the first snow storm of the season. It is even more exciting when the sun shines so bright the next day that it creates a fairyland, particularly on my favorite local pond.

Wishing all my friends, loyal supporters and followers a healthy, prosperous and happy New Year.

Last Crop

Last Crop? - Pastel 8 x 10

Grow it, paint it, eat it! What can be better than that? I am grateful for the inspiration and joy that my garden has given me this summer. It has been a haven in an otherwise turbulent world. In spite of a light frost - confirming the change of seasons - there are still a few more vegetables to pick and enjoy as both food and painting subjects.

First Crop

First Crop - Pastel 12 x 12

It is really satisfying to watch your vegetables grow. This is the first batch of tomatoes ready to pick. They were planted in pots before our enclosed garden got built.

Complimentary Beauties

Complimentary Beauties - Pastel 9 x 12
Sold

I started this painting en plein air until the relentless bugs got the better of me. I took several pictures before being eaten alive and finished it in the studio while looking at the irises from a distance.

Marsh After the Rain

Marsh After the Rain - Pastel 6 x 9

This was done as an online demonstration for a student new to pastels. We explored it step by step: wet underpainting, layering, adjusting and correcting. It may still benefit from a couple of small adjustments... or not.

Forsythia Jungle

Forsythia Jungle - Pastel study 8 x 10
Forsythia comes in many shapes, sometimes trimmed in square, round or cone shapes but I like it best wild and unruly like this cluster I walked by a few days ago.
This painting sold through the #artistsupportpledge. When I reach $1000.00 in sales, I pledge to purchase another artist's work.

Spring Row on Still River Road

Spring Row - Pastel 6 x 9 - Study
 Sold

It has been a cold April but the forsythia is cheering up our neighborhood. I caught this row of spring yellow with the Watchusett mountain in the distance on the only sunny day this week.

I have joined the emerging artist pledge initiated by Matthew Burrows to support one another during the health crisis by buying each other's work. See details on Instagram #artistsupportpledge on my page https://www.instagram.com/joellemffeldman/

I pledge to offer a piece of new artwork for $200 +shipping in the next few weeks until I reach a $1,000 to purchase another artist's work.  It is a great way to support working artists who, with many others, have been hit hard financially by this crisis. Spring Row is my first painting for this initiative. Email me or message me if interested.

Slowly Fading

Slowly Fading - Pastel 8 x 10

The last painting in this mini series as I watch the lanterns slowly fade and turn a light shade of greenish brown and pale cream. Soon to be replaced by the next flower crop from the garden.

The Color Orange

The Color Orange - Pastel 10 x 10

Japanese Lanterns

Japanese Lanterns - Pastel 12 x 12

I have been isolating and social distancing for over 3 weeks and looking for inspiration around the house to paint on cold and rainy days. Japanese lanterns are a winter treat, soon to be replaced with spring blooms from the garden.

Country Ride

Country Ride - Pastel 9 x 24

A scene from the not-so-distant past, this antique car was driving around the normand country side dressed in its spring glory. Timeless!

Normandy Spring

Normandy Spring - Pastel 9 x 24

For the first time in many years I will miss the beautiful poppy (coquelicots) fields in bloom in my native France. But... I have enough memories all the way from my childhood and photo references to keep painting them. Here is to spring, hope and renewal!

Drenched in Light

Drenched in Light - Pastel 11 x 14

No travel in sight for some time but there is plenty of painting inspiration around town. At sunset, the intense western light turns this white house at the edge of the Audubon into bright golds and oranges.

Bennetts Brook in Winter

Bennetts Brook in Winter - Pastel 9 x 12

No need to go far to find my painting inspiration in winter. Another favorite area in town for my daily walks is the Shaker Village that takes you to the Bennetts Brook at the end of the road.

Barn on Prospect Hill

Barn on prospect Hill - Pastel 16 x 20

I walk or drive by Prospect Hill Farm, dedicated to volunteer farming for hunger relief, in my town every day - http://www.community-harvest.org/. The light and shadows on one of the barns were striking on this particular winter day.

Backlit

Backlit - Pastel 10.5" x 8.5"

I was teaching a pastel class when the late afternoon light came through the trees adjacent to the property. Everyone stopped their work, grabbed their phones and snapped away. This is my own interpretation of a precious moment.

Winter Day's End

Winter Day's End - Pastel 11 x 14
